Help Ilkley become a town of live-savers!

The 'Ilkley’s Got Heart' campaign – Prepared To Save a Life, launched last week, the aim is to reach 1000 registered Ilkley lifesavers who have completed free online course.

Over the weekend, Paula Colman from PACO First Aid demonstrated first aid at Tesco in Ilkley and more demos are planned – this Friday (25 Oct) at Booths supermarket at 10.30am, on Friday 1 November outside Hush & Avanti on the Grove Promenade and at the Clarke Foley Centre on Friday 8 November.

The ‘Ilkley’s Got Heart’ campaign, which will run through October and November, hopes to encourage the people who live and work in this historic town to take a simple, FREE, on-line course to equip them with the basic, but essential skills, to save lives and build confidence if they find themselves in a situation where someone needs help.

This e-learning course is designed to give everyone and anyone, of any age essential knowledge of how to help in an emergency. The course is suitable for absolute beginners but qualified first aiders are also encouraged to complete the course which is a great refresher, at the same time as helping to achieve the target of 1000 life savers in Ilkley. The aim is to create a town of live-savers!

It takes on average less than an hour, to complete the course, the associated on-line assessment, and to print off the certificate of completion. The course can be done in short 10-minute sections covers a primary survey of the casualty, CPR, bleeding, choking and stroke.

The online training initiative was developed by Ilkley based Virtual College, Qualsafe Ltd and the charity ‘Community Save a Life Scheme’ (CSALS), to help get more people trained nationally in basic first aid. To get involved with the campaign, people should register via the website www.ilkleysgotheart.co.uk and ticking the box to confirm they are part of the Ilkley campaign.

David Shaw MBE the Chairman of 4 Ilkley Community Group said “this is an excellent team effort after many weeks of planning. The 4 Ilkley Community Group has a clear role of helping to bring people to work together for the good of Ilkley, getting stakeholders together and being ambassadors for Ilkley. The Ilkley’s Got Heart campaign is a great example of this and the passion to make Ilkley a safer and one of the best places to live and work is wonderful to see. Our ultimate goal is to get 1 in 10 people in Ilkley ‘prepared to save a life’ but for now 1000 is our target. I look forward to seeing you all at the next three launch events beginning with Booths this Friday at 10.30am.”

The campaign has been sponsored by Ilkley BID, Virtual College, Westbrook Agency, Bradford MDC, PACO First Aid and is supported by Welcome To Yorkshire and Ilkley Town Council.

A large heart is on display outside Santander Bank on The Grove and will show the progress made towards achieving 1000 individuals completing the course in the LS29 postcode area.
