Curly Hill camp site given a £90k makeover

On Monday night 250 Cub Scouts from all over Wharfedale attended an activity night and camp fire at Curly Hill Camp Site in Ilkley.

The event was held to celebrate and acknowledge the local support received from local businesses & trusts to improve the facilities at the Camp Site & Hostel.  Big improvements are being made which include new toilet facilities, improve paths and drainage and new seating for the camp fire circle.

This Project would not have been possible without the generous support of the following:

Ilkley Round Table

National Lottery - Awards for All

Foyle Foundation

Garfield Western

Spooner Trust

Rank Foundation

Tesco Bags of Help

Bernard Sunley

Ilkley Town Council

Ilkley Rotary Club

Private Donations & Fundraising activities

Through the generous support of various local charitable trusts and foundations we have undertaken a renovation of the camp fire circle including new oak seating and improved drainage. Special thanks to:

  • Sovereign Heath Care Community Programme

  • RE Chadwick Charitable Trust

  • Sir George Martin Trust

Jeremy Ince Chairman said this Project is now fully funded thanks to ‘last brick’ funding from Ilkley Rotary Club ….many thanks for helping us over the line. Thanks to Tim Greenbank our contractor and the project designer,  Martin Peacock Architectural Services Ltd. None of this would have been possible without our fantastic team of volunteer wardens that have worked tirelessly to help ensure the facilities are kept in good order and to welcome our visitors upon their arrival. Thank you for all your help and support during the past year for helping to make Curly Hill Camp Site and Centre such a special experience for our many guests.

Both the Hostel & the Camp Site are available for use by Scouts, Guides, Community Groups, Schools and other Social Purpose organisations. Both facilities are very popular and are available for hire at discounted rates which are set at a level designed to cover costs as well as provide a modest surplus to support ongoing maintenance and improvement.

Facilities are well used by local groups from within the Wharfe Valley (approximately 30% of bookings) as well as further away. We have had some international visitors (Argentina) and Centre has been booked by a foreign exchange school group from France this year. Hostel is now used on a weekly basis by local nursery as a venue for child care and outdoor play.

Camp site is used extensively by local schools as a base for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and for many of the participants this is their first experience of outdoor adventure activities. 15% of users are from deprived areas.

During the past 12 months we have opened the Centre to 114 groups from near & far, generating £24,472 towards maintenance and District funds. The site was also used by 21 District groups for outdoor activities during this period. It has been great to have greater use of the facility from within the local community with regular weekly bookings by a group of local childminders for both indoor and weather permitting, outdoor play.

Future plans include replacement and upgrade of the Gents indoor toilets as well as removal of some of the old trees and landscaping to the camping areas.
