An Ilkley man collapses and dies while out running on moorland


The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association team attended the incident

An Ilkley man tragically collapsed and died while out running on moorland near Ilkley last weekend.


The 52-year-old Ilkley man was found by cyclists on Saturday morning (9 October) on Middleton Moor, near Langbar. above March Ghyll reservoir.


Police officers from two forces, West Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Police attended the scene along with a Yorkshire Air Ambulance.


Eight members of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association attended at the request of the ambulance service. and were able to remove the body from the moor with a Land Rover.


The body was identified on Monday afternoon and his family contacted.


In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said:


"West Yorkshire Police were initially alerted to the incident and confirmed the location was over the North Yorkshire border.


"Their officers attended the scene along with North Yorkshire Police officers. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance arrived at 12.27pm.


"After an air ambulance paramedic certified the death, Fell Rescue team members used their 4x4 vehicle to take the man’s body off the moor at 1.45pm.


"The man’s family have been informed about the sudden death. We are not in a position to name him."
