Ilkley Clean River Group to monitor sickness from river use

The Ilkley Clean River Group has launch its Sickness Survey 2023 to monitor illness as a result of being in the River Wharfe.

A spokesperson for the group said: "The pollution from sewage at Ilkley is national news and has secured some investment from Yorkshire Water to start cleaning up the river. We want to make sure that we get a river that is fit for people and wildlife. We need to keep on monitoring the impact of sewage pollution so that we get the investment needed to stop raw sewage discharges outside storm conditions.

"If you or any of your family have been sick as a result of being in the river (brief episode of vomiting and diarrhoea, or a mild respiratory illness, but may be more serious with a fever, dehydration and kidney problems) please see your GP to see if they can test you for the causes of your illness (and tell them you have been in the river), and also complete our questionnaire

"We will monitor episodes of sickness through the summer and publish the results in September.

"Please tell your family, friends or colleagues, and if you hear of someone who has been ill, please encourage them to complete the survey. Any questions or suggestions please email: ilkeycleanriver@gmail.com"

The survey is available via www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MBFNVKG
