8x8x8 A Fresh Start

Ilkley Playhouse's hugely popular playwriting festival, 8x8x8. Many entries from all over Britain and Europe have competed to secure the eight important slots which will make up the performance.
These eight-minute plays, by eight different playwrights explore our world, ask questions about the past and the future, help us to laugh at ourselves and explore the concept of a fresh start.
After a short interval, there will be an opportunity for questions to some of the authors, directors and members of the two judging panels, (there will be no Q and A at the Wednesday performance).

Picnic at Hanging Rock at Ilkley Playhouse

This is an amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books. Written by Joan Lindsay, adapted by Tom Wright

Valentine’s Day 1900. Appleyard College, founded to bring English values to Australian girls, arranges for the girls and some staff to go for a picnic expedition to the remote Hanging Rock.

Some girls abscond from the group and are last seen heading towards the beckoning Rock. In 2021, 5 performers struggle to solve the mystery of the missing girls and their teacher. Past and present merge as euphoria and terror reverberate through the community.

The play brilliantly explores many themes including: man’s attempts to tame nature; England and Australia; unspoken desires; and feelings so deep that they are hard to articulate.

The Children at Ilkley Playhouse

Sometime after an unspecified environmental disaster at a power station somewhere on the coast of England, married couple Robin and Hazel, both retired nuclear scientists, receive a visit from their former colleague Rose.

The three friends haven’t met for over 30 years and while Rose’s arrival initially brings back many fun-filled, humorous memories of their shared youth, it also unearths long-buried secrets and lies.

Lucy Kirkwood’s powerful and often very funny play has at its heart a meaty moral dilemma and the powerfully resonant message that in order to safeguard the future, we have to take responsibility for the present and the past.

20-24 June. Nightly at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
