2nd Friday Concert: Cantabile Chamber Choir All the World’s a Stage

Cantabile is a chamber choir based in Leeds. We are a small group of experienced and enthusiastic singers who enjoy the challenge of performing a varied repertoire spanning six centuries and including works by contemporary composers. We are dedicated to making a beautiful sound together in a choir where every voice counts.

Led by Musical Director Ian Akroyd, the choir is delighted to be returning to Ilkley Manor House as part of the 2022 concert season, with a celebration of three centuries of music written for the stage.

From Purcell to Bernstein there will be something for everyone to enjoy as Cantabile brings its uplifting acapella sound to the Manor House.

For more details about the choir, including joining, please contact:
info@cantabile-leeds.org.uk

Doors open at 7:00pm and the performance starts at 7:30pm.

Refreshments will be available during the interval.

Tickets are £8 and may be purchased online through Eventbrite (click website link) or in person through the Box Office when the Manor House is open. Tickets may be available on the door but will be subject to availability.

Oliver's Journey Home

Featuring music from David Dawson, an Ilkley musician who died during the pandemic, Oliver's Journey Home will see Ilkley Grammar school student, Hugh Ameigh, take the main part of Oliver along with members of the Unitarian Music Society and New Horizon Orchestra to play the music.

"It is about a teenager called Oliver who lives with his parents at a Fish and Chip shop in Bridlington on Sea. Oliver is keen on the violin and his parents send him to music college in Huddersfield. He cycles there, and after one year he has made some progress but still has a lot to learn (this is like his Trojan War!). He sets off cycling to go home but half way he gets sunstroke and collapses. He is taken in by the landlord and landlady of a pub called "The Fiddlers Three", where he has a revelation about violin-playing which transforms him. He gets better and cycles on via York where he has another amazing experience (these are like the adventures of Odysseus). Eventually he get home with totally new prospects ahead of him."

Mrs Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw

Mrs Kitty Warren has worked hard to provide for her daughter, but how will Vivie react when she learns the truth about her mother’s profession? The stage is set for a tale of duplicity, love and morality.

Banned, censored and controversial during George Bernard Shaw's lifetime, this play resonates in new ways for today’s audience. It shines a light on mother/daughter relationships and the values we hold dear. More than anything though, it is about social pressures and hypocrisy. It is a play fuelled by ideas of social and moral choices.

Shaw’s plays are known for their wit, brilliant arguments and unrelenting challenges to the conventional morality of his time.

“There are no secrets better kept than the secrets that everybody guesses. “

Nightly at 7.30, excl. Sun 18th. Additional 2.30pm performance on Sat 17th.
