Historic Ilkley building begins new chapter as Verbeia Grange

Verbeia Grange has opened its doors in Ilkley following a refurbishment costing in the region of £2 million.
The residential care home on Crossbeck Road, part of Holden Grange, hopes to create around 70 local jobs and a welcoming community where residents feel safe, loved and cared for.
Occupying the former Troutbeck Hydro, its transformation marks a new chapter for the historic building, with a focus on creating a close-knit community where residents can build friendships, enjoy everyday life and feel a sense of belonging.
Dating back to the nineteenth century, the building has served as a hydro, hotel and nursing home. Its colourful history includes a performance by Jimi Hendrix in 1967, while King Charles has also been reported among its former guests. Its place in Ilkley’s history was recently recognised by Ilkley Civic Society with the unveiling of a blue plaque.
The refurbishment has created updated bedrooms, a dining lounge, a restaurant featuring a stained-glass roof dating back to 1901, and communal lounges where residents can spend time together and welcome family and friends.
Deborah from Briggate House Interiors helped shape the interiors, taking inspiration from Ilkley Moor and the surrounding landscape. The colours, furnishings and finishes have been chosen to create a warm, welcoming setting with a connection to the local area.

Offering residential and respite care, Verbeia Grange's Managing Director Leon Berry said: “Seeing Verbeia Grange ready to welcome residents is a proud moment for Jason, me and everyone who has helped bring this project to life.
“From the beginning, our aim has been to create a home where people feel safe, loved and cared for. We want residents to feel known as individuals, to build friendships and to feel part of a community, with their families welcomed into that community too.
“So much work has gone into the building, and now we’re looking forward to filling it with life, friendship and shared experiences.”
A video series has documented the transformation month by month, introducing the people behind the project and following the work through to completion. The final episode reveals the finished home and explores the thinking behind its interior design.
Families exploring residential or respite care for themselves or a loved one are invited to contact the team to find out more or arrange a visit.
