Ilkley author Louise Exeter has published her debut children’s book, Follow Your Star, it’s ok to be different, an illustrated unicorn adventure encouraging children aged 6–10 to embrace individuality, build self-belief and accept others.

Illustrated by award-winning artist Annie b, the story follows Hope, an unusual unicorn who feels rejected because of his appearance. Guided by a star and supported by new friendships, he learns that being different is a strength. Alongside Bella, a Bluebell fairy with a broken wing, Hope discovers courage, kindness and the value of being himself.

With more than 25 years’ experience in complementary therapies and wellbeing, Louise draws on her work as a holistic therapist and mindfulness mentor to explore emotions, identity and self-acceptance.

“When the light in you sees the light in me, magic happens,” says Louise.

The book includes an interactive Imagine and Inspire section, inviting children to write, draw and explore their creativity.

A mother and grandmother living in Ilkley, Louise began writing children's stories during lockdown, when she was missing her clients and wanted to find a new way to support others. Louise hopes the story will inspire children from all backgrounds, particularly sensitive, imaginative and neurodiverse readers, while encouraging conversations about kindness, belonging and acceptance.

Louise adds: “Everyone has their own kind of magic. It’s not what you are, it’s who you are that counts.”

She is also raising awareness of When You Wish Upon a Star, a charity granting wishes to children aged 4–16 living with life-threatening or terminal illnesses.

Follow Your Star, it’s ok to be different is available in paperback for £9.99 through Louise’s website, where signed and dedicated versions can be requested. The book is also available at Amazon UK and Waterstones.
