Ilkley care home residents return to horse riding
Two Ilkley care home residents saddled up again after spending decades away from the stables.
Diana and Sheila, who live at Care UK’s Mayfield View were treated to an unforgettable day at The Ilkley and District Riding Association 6th Point Show, and thanks to the team, 88-year-old Diana and 86-year-old Sheila were able to get up close to meet and groom the horses. Both residents were also thrilled to present the winners of the race with Rosettes
Diana’s love for horses began at the age of 3, where she frequently rode horses in her spare time with her father, whilst Sheila began the hobby as a young adult. However, it had been over 40 years since they last rode a horse.
The special trip was organised as part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which gives residents the chance to fulfil lifelong dreams or rediscover forgotten passions – whether that means horse riding, enjoying a fish and chip supper, or trying something new.
Katie Cliff, Home Manager at Mayfield View, said: “Diana and Sheila often speak about their love for horses, so we knew we had to take them back to the stables.
“Getting older shouldn’t mean giving up on lifelong passions. Seeing them reconnect with something that brought them so much joy in their younger years was incredibly moving. These moments highlight how important it is to support residents in staying connected with their hobbies.
“We’d like to thank The Ilkley and District Riding Association for helping us make Diana and Sheila’s
wish a reality – it was truly a day to remember!”
