Ilkley Civic Society's heritage walk

For its Heritage Open Day event this year Ilkley Civic Society is offering a walk, Hebers Ghyll & West Grove Road Villas on Thursday September 14.

The walk begins from the bridge at the bottom of Hebers Ghyll at 2pm.

This will be a 90 minute walk led by local historian Alex Cockshott: "We shall visit the gardens of Hebers Mount and walk down Hebers Ghyll Drive to the site of the former Hebers Ghyll.

"Much of residential west Ilkley is late Victorian and Edwardian. There are substantial gentlemen’s country residences with interesting architectural features. Their gardens were landscaped and now have many mature trees. We will be able to see how some properties have been sub-divided for changes in lifestyles and increasing demand for property. We will see the frontage of Hebers Mount designed by Alexander Adkin, architect of many Ilkley buildings. The walk will finish at the site of the former Hebers Ghyll Hydro.

"Parking: we recommend that you park at the top of Hebers Ghyll Drive at the junction with Grove Road. It’s then a walk of 5 minutes to the bridge at the bottom of Hebers Ghyll."
