Ilkley community raises £4,200 for Nepal flood relief appeal
Both Rotary Clubs in Ilkley have acted at speed since the devastating floods in Nepal left thousands in urgent need of shelter, clean water and food.
The Rotary Club of Ilkley and The Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale have organised collections for the appeal.
Two members of The Rotary Club of Ilkley, Peter and Rika Mitchell, joined forces with the Ilkley Bandstand Trust over the Bank Holiday weekend to set up a pop-up donation point in support of the Rotary Nepal ShelterBox Appeal. They collected donations from the public, as well as contributions from performers at the bandstand, raising a total of £1,000. The Rotary Club of Ilkley will match the amount, bringing the total donation to £2,000.
On Saturday, The Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale collected donations at Ilkley's Springs Lane Tesco store, where customers were very generous and donated £2,200.
The Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale spokesperson said: "Grateful thanks from the Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale to Tesco and the generous Ilkley Community for their donations towards disaster relief. The bucket collection, along with some substantial donations, raised a fantastic total of £2,200. The money will be forwarded to ShelterBox who provide emergency shelter, essential aid and disaster relief equipment to people in devastated areas. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this appeal."

Next up for The Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale is the annual Recycle Day on Saturday 26 September, the club will once again be in the main South Hawksworth Street car park collecting items which will be upcycled by various different charities. Items welcomed include trainers (in clean condition), spectacles, backpacks, as well as bicycles (not e-bikes), mobility aids, sewing machines and workshop tools.
