Ilkley Scouts celebrate a new Explorer brand and programme

A new Explorer Scouts brand and programme has been launched, bringing a fresh new experience to young people aged 14 to 18 across the Ilkley area.

The new programme has been designed around the interests and needs of today’s young people, with a renewed focus on adventure, real-life skills, wellbeing and making a positive difference in the community.

Explorers will have more choice in how they spend their time at Scouts, with a mix of new and familiar Activity Badges, new Challenge Awards and Top Awards. The programme is designed to be flexible and youth-led, giving young people greater opportunities to shape their own experiences and pursue the things that matter to them.

The launch forms part of a major national relaunch by Scouts, which aims to help around 50,000 Explorer Scouts across the UK find adventure, a place to belong and skills for a brighter future.

For Ilkley’s Explorers, the new programme means more opportunities to try something new, develop practical skills, take on challenges and make memories with friends.

Toby Hammond, County Lead Volunteer, said: “We’re really excited to be bringing the new Explorer brand and programme to Ilkley. Explorers are at an important stage of their lives, when they’re becoming more independent, discovering what they’re capable of and thinking about the future. This new programme gives them the freedom to take the lead, try new things and build skills that will stay with them for life.

“Most importantly, it’s about making sure young people have a place where they belong, where their ideas are listened to and where they can have great adventures with their friends. We’re looking forward to seeing Ilkley’s Explorers make the new programme their own.”

The new Explorer programme has been developed with input from both young people and volunteers. Scouts says it is intended to give Explorers a clearer journey while retaining the flexibility to create a programme that reflects their interests.

Explorers are young people aged 14 to 18 who meet in Explorer Units, supported by adult volunteers. Alongside their weekly activities, they can take part in adventurous activities, develop leadership skills and work towards awards.
