Ilkley Wharfedale Rotary launches Nepal Disaster Appeal

The Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale is calling on the local community to support people affected by the devastating disaster in Nepal.

Rotary members and volunteers will be collecting donations at Tesco Ilkley on Saturday 5 September from 9am, with funds helping provide urgently needed humanitarian support to communities affected by the disaster.

In the aftermath of a major emergency, families can be left without safe shelter, clean water, food, sanitation and other essential supplies. Getting practical assistance to those affected quickly can make a vital difference.

Rotary’s international network enables members to support humanitarian responses around the world. ShelterBox, Rotary’s global partner in disaster response, is working with partners in the region to assess the scale of the emergency and determine what support communities need most.

The partnership has previously delivered emergency shelter to almost 68,000 people in Nepal following the devastating earthquakes of 2015.

The appeal is asking residents to give whatever they can. Whether it is loose change, £5, £10 or more, every donation can contribute to practical support for people facing an uncertain future.

A spokesperson for The Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale said: “Behind every disaster headline are real people—families, children and older people whose lives can be changed in an instant. We know how generous the people of Ilkley and Wharfedale can be, and we hope the community will come together once again to support those in desperate need.”

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the collection at the Springs Lane Tesco store on Saturday 5 September from 9am, speak to Rotary volunteers and make a donation if they are able.

Those unable to donate can also help by sharing the appeal with friends, family and neighbours.
