Ilkley's virtual remembrance service on Sunday

Ilkley's Memorial Gardens

Ilkley Town Council have joined with local radio station Rombalds Radio for a virtual remembrance service on Sunday both online and on air.

Due to the social distancing regulations in place prior to November 4th, Ilkley Town Council and local partners involved in our traditional Parade and Act of Remembrance took the difficult decision in October that a physical Remembrance parade and ceremony would not be possible this year.

Bradford Council have said Individuals remain at liberty to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in the Memorial Gardens, in a socially distant manner, at any time before or after Remembrance Sunday, but the town can not gather to pay their respects in the usual way.

Ilkley's Town Council, District Councillors and Father Philip Gray (acting as a representative of Churches Together in Ilkley) joined with Rombalds Radio to prepare and record a video of an Act of Remembrance on behalf of the whole town, which will be first broadcast online (and as an audio-described version on Rombalds Radio) at 3pm on Sunday 8th November. It will then be freely available to view after the event. The presentation includes a short service of remembrance including a short talk, a reading, the laying of wreaths and other traditional elements, and lasts about 15 minutes.

Ilkley Town Mayor, Councillor Mark Stidworthy, said: "In this significant year marking 75 years since VE Day and VJ Day and the end of World War II, it is particularly important that we remember and honour all those men and women who have given their lives in the service of our freedom, either in that conflict, in those before or since, and as peacekeepers around the world. We also call to mind all those who have sustained life-changing injuries, the impact of loss on families in the Ilkley district, and the ongoing struggles of so many citizens, particularly veterans, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. I thank my District Councillor colleagues, Father Gray, Ilkley's Town Clerk and Rombalds Radio for coming together to create this short ceremony, which I hope residents will find a fitting and respectful tribute at this difficult time."

The Act of Remembrance will be first broadcast at 3pm, Sunday November 8th on The Ilkley Town Council, Ilkley Chat and Rombalds Radio Facebook pages.  It will also be available on the Rombalds Radio website and YouTube channel.

The audio only version will be aired from 3pm on Rombalds Radio, you can listen via the free app, website or smart speaker.
