Local scouts return from the adventure of a lifetime in Peru

Explorer Scouts from Ilkley and Addingham have returned home after an unforgettable two-week international expedition to Peru.

The young people were part of a 40-strong West Yorkshire Scouts unit, comprising 30 Explorer Scouts and 10 adult volunteer leaders, who travelled to Peru for an action-packed trip two years in the planning.

The expedition saw the Explorers experience some of Peru’s most iconic sights and take on a series of challenges, including trekking the historic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, exploring the ancient city of Cusco and taking part in community work at a local school.

The trip was the culmination of two years of preparation, with the young people taking part in training weekends and fundraising activities to prepare themselves for the physical and practical challenges of travelling and trekking at high altitude.

And challenges certainly weren’t in short supply once they arrived in Peru.

From missed flights to horrendous weather conditions on the Inca Trail, the group had to adapt quickly and support one another. During their time in Cusco, they also experienced a 7.1 magnitude earthquake which struck around 200 kilometres away from their base and felt in the city.

Despite the unexpected events, the young people took everything in their stride, demonstrating the teamwork, resilience and independence that Scouting aims to develop.

The expedition was supported by a dedicated team of volunteer leaders from across the county, including leaders from Addingham, Burley-in-Wharfedale and Menston, whose planning and leadership helped make the trip possible.

For the Explorers, the trip provided far more than an opportunity to see some of the world’s most spectacular sights. They experienced a different culture, worked alongside local communities, pushed themselves both physically and mentally, and created memories that will stay with them for many years to come.

One of the highlights was completing the Inca Trail and finally arriving at Machu Picchu, a moment that brought together two years of preparation and months of anticipation.

The expedition also provided the young people with a real-life lesson in dealing with adversity. With flights missed, plans changing and conditions sometimes challenging, the group learned the importance of remaining calm, working together and supporting each other.

The West Yorkshire Scouts team arrived back in the UK this week, tired but proud of what they had achieved.

For many of the Explorers, their Peruvian adventure will be one of their most memorable Scouting experiences — and an experience that demonstrated just how far teamwork, determination and a willingness to embrace a challenge can take you.
