With support from Ilkley Town Council and Ilkley Round Table the Ilkley Riverside Pétanque Terrain (or court!) has been built.
Based on land close to the Riverside Hotel, phase one is now complete and the 12m by 12m terrain is available to use free of charge, just take along your boules.
Pétanque is a sport that falls into the category of boules sports, in which players or teams play their boules/balls towards a smaller target ball.
In its latest newsletter Ilkley Town Council said: “This is a valuable addition to the thriving public park, and has full support of the Friends of Ilkley Riverside Park.”
Phase two is to add additional spectator benches and form a club, The Ilkley and District Pétanque Association (IDPA) in the Spring, an independent Charitable and Sports Association.
Membership to the club will be optional, the terrain will be a community resource, be disabled friendly and can be used for free of charge when not in use by the club.
It is hoped in the future boules sets will be available to loan, possibly via The Riverside Hotel.
