The AA recently recognised One Tivoli Place Guest House with two awards for cuisine (Dinner and Breakfast) plus a prestigious overall award of ‘Gold.’

The Inspector made a reservation for an overnight stay with dinner and arrived incognito. For dinner she started with handmade Japanese spring rolls, followed by slow-cooked miso beef and Japanese chocolate cake for dessert. She finished with sencha, Japanese green tea accompanied with a handmade Fusion chocolate.

The slow cooked beef (shin beef) is sourced from a local farm and marinated in full bodied red wine plus miso (about 20% of the weight of the beef) for 12 hours and then slow cooked in the same for a further eight hours, along with shredded ginger, garlic, mushrooms, onions plus pearl barley to thicken the gravy. The miso is cultured in house and then matured for at least one year to give an amazing umami flavour that is both warming and comforting.

Rika Mitchell, chef and owner of One Tivoli Place says,

“I prepare food according to the principles and philosophy of Yakuzen, which ensures the dinner is tasty, nutritious, visually appealing and most importantly, balanced to ensure good health. Appetizing and satisfying food can also be healthy, making you feel good and enabling you to sleep well, then wake up refreshed and energised.”

The following morning, breakfast options included kipper (sourced from the old Fortune smokehouse on Whitby harbour), smoked salmon (also supplied by Fortune) with scrambled egg, omelette, a traditional Japanese breakfast and full English breakfast. The Inspector chose the latter, accompanied with a range of homemade bread including shokupan (Japanese soft loaf), sourdough cob, soft rolls filled with wild garlic pesto (garlic forged from the banks of the Wharfe) as well as handmade croissants and pan au chocolat. All breads and pastries are made with home-cultured sourdough starter.

Following checkout, the Inspector revealed her true identity and conveyed verbal feedback with commendations and congratulations.

The Inspector’s summary appears on the AA rated trips website:

“Dining is a standout feature, with Rika preparing authentic Japanese cuisine that brings a unique and memorable experience to the stay, complemented by carefully presented breakfasts each morning.”

The Inspector recognised the overall experience of staying at One Tivoli Place in the following:

“The 5 individually designed bedrooms present a fresh, elegant style with quality furnishings, excellent comfort, and thoughtful extras including minibars, robes, and slippers…. Guests can unwind in the inviting lounge, complete with books and a piano, or take advantage of useful local information to explore the area.”

Previous guests concur with the Inspector’s positive impression, as logged on Google reviews and TripAdvisor, where the average rating is 4.9/5. Some reviews refer to One Tivoli Place as a “hidden gem”, perhaps because the guest house is completely independent and does not appear on Booking.com, Air B&B or any other third-party booking platform.
