Record crowds watch Ilkley Cycle Races

Friday 3rd July saw the biggest and most electric edition yet of the Ilkley Cycle Races, with more riders, more spectators, and a louder atmosphere than ever before as the town centre transformed into a high-speed circuit of elite cycling and community celebration.

Thousands lined the streets to witness fast-paced racing across multiple categories, with fierce competition and standout performances defining an unforgettable evening of sport.

The Lister Horsfall Grand Prix delivered a dramatic showdown, where Toby Barnes emerged victorious after a heated battle, crossing the line 44 seconds ahead of Jacob Bush, who secured a hard-fought second place. In the Milly Grace Women’s Grand Prix, Anna Morris claimed an impressive win, showcasing strength and control throughout the demanding circuit. The Bini Brew Co Classic saw a decisive performance from Jody Mills, taking victory after a tactical and tightly contested race. In the Andy’s Man Club Masters race, experience proved crucial as David Shackleton powered to victory in a strong field of seasoned competitors. The MAS Design Youth Races highlighted the next generation of talent, with Daniel Shipton setting the fastest time of the evening, signalling a bright future for the sport.

Beyond the racing, spectators enjoyed a vibrant festival atmosphere with a standout selection of food and drink. Local favourites added to the event’s success, including Lishmans, Loaf & Loaded, Bloom Coffee, Bini Brew, and Martinez, all of whom contributed to a lively street-food and café experience throughout the evening.

“Fridays Ilkley Cycle Races just keep getting bigger and better every year,” said Linford from Loaf & Loaded. “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible - the streets were packed, the energy was unreal, and it was brilliant to be right in the middle of a community coming together like that. We’re proud to be part of an event that celebrates Ilkley at its very best, and we can’t wait for next year.”

Ilkley Cycling Club, the event organisers, extended their sincere thanks to all the volunteers whose commitment and support made the event possible. From early morning setup through to the final race and clean-down, the dedication of volunteers helped ensure the event ran safely, smoothly, and with the welcoming atmosphere that has become synonymous with the Ilkley Cycle Races.

They also acknowledged the invaluable contribution of sponsors and local supporters, whose backing continues to drive the growth of the event and allows it to remain free for spectators while supporting both elite and grassroots cycling.

“Friday’s races showed exactly what this community can achieve when everyone pulls together,” said Tom Harris, event manager, “We had record crowds, outstanding racing across every category, and a fantastic atmosphere all evening. From riders to volunteers to our sponsors, everyone stepped up - and it’s that shared effort that keeps raising the bar year after year.”

With its largest crowds to date and unforgettable racing moments, this year’s Ilkley Cycle Races firmly established itself as one of the standout criterium events in the UK cycling calendar.
