Sue Ryder's Christmas Treecycling' scheme covering Ilkley launched

National healthcare and bereavement charity Sue Ryder is calling on residents in the Ilkley area to ‘branch out’ and recycle their real Christmas tree this January.  

Covering Airedale, Wharfedale and the Dales, the scheme has limited capacity available and the charity is encouraging early reservations to secure a collection.  

The festive season is always busy, and while the decorations may not yet be up, you can make life easier by signing up early for Sue Ryder’s Christmas Treecycling initiative. Once the celebrations are over, Sue Ryder’s ‘fir‑iendly’ and reliable volunteers will collect your real Christmas tree straight from your front door, garden, or driveway. 

Real Christmas trees are 100% recyclable and can be turned into compost or wood chippings, which will be used in local parks and woodlands or to generate green energy.  Airedale, Wharfedale, the Dales residents who sign up to the scheme will not only be supporting the important work that Sue Ryder does but will be helping the environment as well.   

Sue Ryder’s team of ‘tree-rrific’ volunteers will be covering households in all BD postcodes, as well as LA2, LA6, BB18, LS29, HX2, HX3 and HX7 postcodes and will be collecting trees between 6 – 19 January 2026. 

Last year Sue Ryder provided palliative and bereavement care to thousands of families across the country, including those supported by our hospice and community teams at Sue Ryder  Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope. Sue Ryder's bereavement support includes an online community forum and local Grief Kind Spaces.   

Andrew Wood, Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, explained what a difference Christmas Treecycling makes to Sue Ryder: 

“Last year our Christmas Treecycling services in Airedale, Wharfedale the Dales saved 2,846 trees from landfill, raising £42,500 for Sue Ryder, helping more people than ever to access our specialist care and support.” 

“By choosing to recycle your real tree with an optional donation to Sue Ryder, your Christmas tree could become the gift of expert care, advice and compassion so that no one faces death or grief alone.”
