Thousands flock to join Ilkley's Yorkshire Day Weekend

More than 15,000 people flocked to Ilkley over the Yorkshire Day Celebration Weekend as the town centre was transformed into a vibrant festival of music, food, drink and community spirit.

Over two glorious days, The Grove welcomed thousands of residents and visitors to enjoy an exciting programme of live entertainment, the Yorkshire Market, family activities, local food and drink, and a celebration of everything that makes Yorkshire such a special place.

Organised entirely by volunteers through Olicana Events CIC, the weekend once again demonstrated the incredible things that can be achieved when a community comes together. From local businesses and performers to volunteers, sponsors and community organisations, hundreds of people played their part in creating an event that was free for everyone to enjoy.

The scale of the celebration was reflected in some impressive figures. Across the weekend, visitors enjoyed more than 4,000 pints, tucked into over 500 portions of chips, and polished off more than 600 sausage rolls, all while enjoying over 20 hours of live entertainment across multiple venues.

Saturday saw The Grove come alive with two live music stages, while hundreds took part in the special Yorkshire Day edition of East Holmes parkrun before making their way into the town centre to continue the celebrations. Throughout the day, families enjoyed a packed programme of activities at Canker Wells, while Ilkley Manor House hosted traditional maypole dancing, family activities and heritage experiences, adding to the town-wide festival atmosphere.

The Yorkshire Market, delivered by Real Markets, attracted thousands of visitors, showcasing dozens of independent traders, makers and producers from across the county. Visitors also had the opportunity to enjoy a true taste of Ilkley, with Bini Brew Co, Ilkley Brewery and Wharfedale Brewery all taking part in the celebrations.

On Sunday, the celebrations continued at the Bandstand with another fantastic programme of live music curated by Ilkley Live, giving visitors another opportunity to enjoy outstanding local talent in one of Ilkley's most iconic settings. Independent market traders lined The Grove again offering a wide array of locally sourced food and goods.

Tom Harris, Director of Olicana Events CIC, said: "This weekend perfectly captured everything we hoped the Yorkshire Day Celebration would become. It wasn't just about the music, the market or the food and drink - it was about creating a space where people could come together, catch up with friends, support local businesses and celebrate the community we're so lucky to be part of.

"Standing on The Grove and seeing thousands of people enjoying themselves was an incredibly proud moment for everyone involved. This event is organised entirely by volunteers, and seeing the town embrace it so enthusiastically makes every hour of planning worthwhile."

The live music programme, curated by Ilkley Live, was one of the highlights of the weekend, with hundreds of performers taking to the Main Stage, Acoustic Stage and Bandstand across the two days.

Kevin Leather from Ilkley Live, said: "The atmosphere across the weekend was simply fantastic. It was wonderful to see people of all ages filling the town, discovering new artists, singing along with familiar favourites and enjoying such a diverse programme of live music.

"We're incredibly proud to have worked alongside Olicana Events to create a weekend where live music brought people together. Events like this show just how much talent we have in and around Ilkley, and we're already looking forward to doing it all again next year."

The Yorkshire Market, organised by Real Markets, brought an array of independent Yorkshire businesses to the heart of the celebration, complementing Ilkley's own thriving high street and encouraging visitors to spend the day exploring the town.

Olicana Events CIC has extended its sincere thanks to everyone who helped make the weekend possible, including Ilkley Live for curating an outstanding music programme, Real Markets for delivering a vibrant Yorkshire Market, and the many performers, traders, volunteers, suppliers, emergency services and local businesses who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

Following the success of last year's inaugural event, this year's Yorkshire Day Celebration Weekend has firmly cemented its place in Ilkley's summer calendar, creating another memorable weekend that celebrated local talent, supported independent businesses and brought the community together.

As the stages came down and The Grove returned to normal, one thing was clear - Yorkshire Day in Ilkley has become far more than a celebration of the county. It has become a celebration of the people who make this town such a remarkable place to live, work and visit.
