1000 mile cycle challenge for Ilkley Town Ladies manager

Ilkley Town Ladies team manager, Tony Gill, is cycling from Lands’ End to John O groats this summer and supporting four charities.

Tony, who will undertake this huge challenge in the summer, told Ilkley Chat ‘I have decided that it’s time to raise funds and awareness for a number of charities close to my heart and the two that have touched me most in recent years.  If I can make a difference to just one person’s life then I will have succeeded.’

As Tony spends most of his working life in Preston at Uclan, one of the great causes is the Dianne Oxberry Trust to help raise awareness of Ovarian cancer.

His mentor and inspiration to study died tragically of MND and a running colleague has now been diagnosed with the illness, so Tony says ‘it’s time to help raise awareness of MND.’

Manorlands is his third cause, ‘The work that the hospice does is outstanding and should be applauded a couple of friends have recently had relatives who sadly passed away in Manorlands and the care and compassion was of the highest standard and it is hoped that the funds raised will help this to continue.’

And explaining the fourth cause, Tony who is a lifelong fan of Sunderland AFC said ‘I could not ride a 1000 miles without raising money for the Bradley Lowery foundation, the strength, courage that young Bradley showed in his short life should be an inspiration to us all, again if one child can have a better quality of life no matter how small that is then it will be worth the pain and heartache of the ride’

Tony’s aim is to raise £500 for each of his chosen charities, his challenge will start at Lands’ End on 21 July and is expected to take 12 days.
