Top-rated grammar school invites applications following recent expansion

Parents across Ilkley, Addingham and Burley-in-Wharfedale who are interested in their son transferring secondary school during the current academic year are being invited to apply for a place at Skipton’s Ermysted’s Grammar School.

Following the opening of a new building and an increase to the school’s published admissions number, Ermysted’s has additional capacity for pupils to join Year 8, Year 9 or Year 10 in January 2019.

Applicants will sit three 40-minute admission tests in English, Maths and Science on Wednesday 14th November. An indication of the topics covered in each test is available from the school’s website.

Ermysted’s, thought to be the 7th oldest state school in Britain, was rated ‘Outstanding’ at its most recent Ofsted inspection and its pupils consistently achieve great success in their exam results.

Headteacher Michael Evans said: “We are delighted to be able to offer a number of places at Ermysted’s to those young people who may benefit from the programme we can offer. We work hard to create an environment where every pupil feels valued and supported to achieve their very best – so as well as academic success, we place a strong emphasis on development of character, resilience and self-confidence.”

“Outside the classroom we have a wide range of extra-curricular activities for pupils, ranging from the sports field to the stage, from the concert hall to the debating chamber. Last year our junior pupils reached the national final of the UKMT Team Challenge and the Kids’ Lit Quiz, and our intermediate cross country team was crowned national champions.”

“I encourage anyone interested in finding out more to contact the school directly.”

More details about admissions to Ermysted’s are available at or by calling the school on 01756 792186. The closing date for applications to be considered for this term’s testing is Monday 5th November 2018.
