Ilkley Civic Society Big Conservation Conversation Exhibition
This year is the 50th Anniversary of the Civic Amenities Act 1967 which introduced Conservation Areas into the world of planning, heritage, and conservation. Civic Voice has launched The Big Conservation Conversation to celebrate and promote discussion about conservation areas and listed buildings and their future, 50 years on.
As part of this Big Conservation Conversation, Ilkley Civic Society is organising an exhibition on Friday and Saturday 16th and 17th June at Christchurch The Grove Ilkley between 10:00am and 3:00pm.
The theme of the exhibition is conservation work and conservation areas and is an opportunity to talk to residents and visitors about what is going on in the town as well as things like listed buildings and buildings at risk; design and changes to properties and businesses in the Conservation Areas; and the role of the planning and enforcement.
A number of local organisations will be joining in with the event including Ilkley Design Statement Group, Ilkley in Bloom, Friends of the Manor House, Ilkley Manor House Group, Friends of Ilkley Moor, Friend of the Kings Hall and Winter Garden, Ilkley Neighbourhood Plan Group, Ilkley Arts Trail, Addingham Civic Society, and Friends of Ilkley Cemetery. It is hoped that some local architects and building firms will also be attending.
In the week before the exhibition the Civic Society will be delivering an informative leaflet to every property and business within the three Conservation Areas in the Ilkley area (Ilkley, Ben Rhydding and Middleton). This will briefly cover the advantages of living in conservation areas, authenticity, advice on maintenance and changes to properties and businesses and the role of planning.
On Saturday 17thJune there will also be a Heritage Guided Walk around the Ilkley Conservation Area led by local historian Alex Cockshott. Meet at Christchurch at 4pm. The walk will last approximately 90 minutes and there is a suggested donation of £2 per adult.
Saturday 17th June has been designated National Civic Day and there will be national publicity from Civic Voice in the run up to the day and events happening all over the country.
The exhibition will transfer to Ilkley Library from the 17th July to 9th September. And there will be a talk on Ilkley Conservation Areas in Ilkley Library of 4th August starting at 2pm.
