Ilkley Cycle Races 2017
Ilkley Cycling Club will again be hosting the Ilkley Cycle Races, this year on Wednesday 21st June, there will be five races from 5:55 pm, with the men's elite race rounding off the evening.
The event gets underway with races for the under 14s and under 16s, these races give a rare opportunity for young riders to race on closed roads in front of a big crowd. Local rider, Tom Pidcock, who took part in the first edition as a 14 year old, has returned to race each year, and has gone on to become the World Junior Cyclo-Cross Champion and the winner of the highly prestigious Junior Paris-Roubaix classic. Tom will again be racing at Ilkley this year, having recently beaten all the UK based professionals in a town centre race at Durham despite still only being 17 years old. He will face tough competition from Scott Thwaites, the 27 year old professional who was born in Burley in Wharfedale. Scott is currently racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France with his Dimension Data world tour team, riding against the top stars of the sport such as Alberto Contador, Richie Porte, Alejandro Valverde and Chris Froome.
It promises to be a fascinating (and free!) spectacle to see riders from all ages races on the streets of Ilkley. Ilkley Brewery and Lishman's are providing the bar & BBQ.
