Ilkley Rugby Club pays tribute to a Past President

In the clubs first game of 2020 at Stacks Field on Saturday against Carlisle Rugby Club, players and fans of Ilkley Rugby Club held a minutes silence to remember ex club President, Sir David Jones CBE, who sadly passed on Saturday, 28 December, aged 76.

The Ilkley Gazette reported Sir David Jones CBE was famed for being the man who turned around the fortunes of clothing retailer Next and was President of Ilkley Rugby Club for seven years, he stepped down from the role in 2019 due to ill health.

Sir David, who had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 39 though he kept the fact secret until 2001, had been in poor health in recent years.

The clubs Facebook page paid tribute saying ‘David was a generous man, a witty President and a great friend to Ilkley RFC and he will missed tremendously by all.’

On the pitch Ilkley went on to win the game 32-29.
