Ban for Burley-in-Wharfedale driver caught at 130mph

A man from Burley-in-Wharfedale has been banned from driving for three months and has to pay over £1,000 after he was caught driving at 130mph on the A64.

44-year-old Robert Cummings of Langford Lane was captured by a mobile safety camera at Whitwell Hill on 16 May 2026.

Due to the exceptionally dangerous speed, the camera operator called the details of the vehicle into the police control room and officers from the Roads Policing Unit quickly deployed to the area.

Cumming’s white, Volkswagen Golf R, was brought to a stop near Tadcaster where he admitted he had no excuse for driving at such high speed.

The officer reported him for speeding and he was subsequently summonsed to court.

Due to the speed, he did not qualify for a speed awareness course or the option of a fine.

He appeared at York Magistrates’ Court on 14 July 2026 where he was issued with the ban, fined £666, ordered to pay a surcharge of £266 and Crown Prosecution Service costs of £130.

Deployment Manager, Richard Fletcher, said: “Mr Cummings drove at almost twice the legal speed limit with complete disregard for other road users, putting multiple people at risk of serious injury or worse.

“The quick thinking and subsequent actions of the safety camera officer and responding police officers ensured that he was stopped at the earliest opportunity and brought to Court to face the consequences of his actions.”
