The Ilkley Labour Party have selected small local business-owner, Michael Baldwin, to represent the Ilkley ward on Bradford District Council on the 4th of May.

Mr Baldwin, 50, who has lived in Ilkley for over two decades, has four children who all attended Ilkley Grammar School.

He has been involved in local politics for many years, particularly on environmental issues as a member of Wharfedale Friends of the Earth, and more recently in the Ilkley Labour Party. Mr Baldwin believes these experiences have given him a deep understanding of the issues facing the residents of Ilkley, especially the cost of living crisis, and our need for a cleaner and safer environment.

On Bradford Council, he promises to bring a particular focus to these issues, highlighting the need to revitalise Ilkley’s overstretched public services which we all depend on. He is committed to using his business experience managing scientific research projects to work as an effective councillor, and collaborate with the town’s excellent community and business groups to deliver the greener, fairer future the town deserves.

Speaking at the Ilkley Labour Party’s Christmas Event at the Ilkley Moor Vaults, John Grogan, who was chosen as Labour’s candidate for Keighley and Ilkley Constituency in November, congratulated Mr Baldwin on his selection saying: “Political allegiances seem to be changing at the moment and the local Labour Party has high hopes not only for the district election but also for the Ilkley town elections which will take place on the same day in May 2023.

“Michael knows both the worlds of business and politics well which will be a great asset. Just over 100 years ago members of the emerging Labour Party in Ilkley got elected onto the Ilkley Urban District Council.

“They were instrumental in the building of the library and the King’s hall. Michael himself is very much in that tradition of progressive civic entrepreneurialism.”

Mr Baldwin said: “I’m delighted to be selected as the Labour candidate for Ilkley and look forward to the campaign leading up to the election in May.

"As a Bradford councillor, I will work hard for the people of Ilkley, and will support action in our community towards a more sustainable and fairer future for all.”
