An Ilkley-based qualified teacher and English specialist has launched a tutoring service to support students through the mental and emotional challenges of education.
Thrive Learning offers bespoke tutoring for students wanting additional GCSE support and those struggling with a classroom environment.
Founder of Thrive Learning and English teacher Melissa Watson said:
“Many young people find school-based learning a real challenge – whether sensory, emotionally or academically. While Covid has left very real gaps in students’ learning and confidence, some young people are in limbo while waiting for a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) diagnosis while others simply need additional help with exam preparation.
“My purpose is to use personalised tuition strategies to support any young person who is feeling disengaged with school, feels they’re falling behind, feels anxious in English lessons or just needs a tutoring boost. The aim is to equip them for success – whatever that looks like, boost GCSE grades in both Literature and Language and support those who simply don’t suit classroom learning.”
As a qualified teacher and English specialist with several years’ experience working with SEND students and those with neurodiverse needs, Melissa’s Thrive Learning tutoring offers a range of teaching across different exam boards and qualifications.
Operating out of office space on The Grove in Ilkley or delivered in a student’s own home, Melissa says her priority is ensuring psychological safety for everyone she tutors.
She adds:
“Education is often tied to trauma and anxiety, and I work to create emotional safety and empower children and young people to thrive inside and outside the classroom. Education is not “one size fits all” and everyone should be able to access teaching that’s as unique as they are.”
