Starbucks smaller advertising pole refused

Plans to install a smaller five meter sign at Startbucks in Ben Rhydding have been refused by Bradford Council planners, citing it 'would appear as a disproportionate and discordant feature'.

After the removal of a nine metre totem sign installed in 2025 without consent, EG on The Move applied for advertisement consent for a five metre tall sign in a different location on the northwest corner, closer to the neighbouring Esso filling station.

There is no statutory requirement for a Local Planning Authority to publicise its receipt of an application for express advertisement consent, however 7 objections were received.

Ilkley Town Council had recommend refusal of the application, mentioning its 5 meter height is excessive in close proximity to residential properties and it would not adhere to Ilkley Neighbourhood Development Plan (INDP19 Shopfronts), internally illuminated signs will not be supported.

The reasons for refusal:

"The proposed 5metre totem sign by reason of its siting on a prominent and elevated position adjacent to the main highway would appear as a disproportionate and discordant feature.

"The incongruous nature is compounded when viewed in the context of muted commercial signage within the wider locality and adjacent petrol station. The resulting signage would not be in keeping with the immediate residential setting and cumulatively over-dominates the character and appearance of the street scene to the detriment of the visual amenity.

"The proposal is therefore contrary to the objectives of the National Planning Policy Framework."
