The annual Ben Rhydding Golf Scramble provided a thrilling evening on Tuesday, with this year’s competition going right down to the final putt as teams from across the local community battled it out.

The popular event brings together members and friends of Ilkley Round Table and 41 Club for a nine-hole scramble, combining teamwork, golfing ability and a healthy dose of friendly competition.

After nine holes, two teams were tied, meaning the winner had to be decided by a dramatic putting contest. David Shaw MBE represented his team against Ben Cackett and held his nerve to secure victory.

The winning team consisted of Captain Richard Bradley, David Shaw MBE, Pete Haigh and Tom Thompson.

David Shaw MBE said: “It was a fantastic evening and a really enjoyable competition. After nine holes with the scores level, I don’t think anyone expected it to come down to a putting contest. There was definitely a bit of pressure, so I was very pleased to hold my nerve and get the win for the team. Full credit to Ben – it was a great contest.”

The event once again highlighted the strong links between Ilkley Round Table and 41 Club, bringing current and former members together for an evening of golf, camaraderie and friendly rivalry.

An Ilkley Round Table spokesperson said: “The Ben Rhydding Golf Scramble is always one of the highlights of the year. Having two teams tied after nine holes and needing a putting contest to decide the winner was a fantastic way to finish. Congratulations to Richard, David, Pete and Tom!”

The organisers would like to thank Ben Rhydding Golf Course for hosting the event and everyone who took part. With such a close finish this year, the challenge is already set for next year: can the current champions retain their title?
