u3a winners drawn by Ilkley's mayor

Ilkley Town Mayor, Cllr Mark Stidworthy , draws the winners of the u3a prize draw

At last Monday’s Town Council meeting Ilkley’s Mayor, Cllr Mark Stidworthy, drew the winners of Ilkley & District u3a’s prize draw.

All those who visited the u3a’s online Photographic Exhibition and voted for their favourite photo were automatically entered into the draw and three lucky voters won a £20 book token.

Alan King, one of the winners said, “What a pleasant surprise. I’m a sucker for a landscape and there were some excellent examples in this year’s entries. The prize will possibly be spent on maps or an atlas.”

Another winner, Fiona Taylor commented, “ What a wonderful surprise! I thought the online Photographic Exhibition was superb and the quality of the pictures was outstanding, but for me it was Mary Podesta’s “Lines in the Landscape” that stole my heart. It simply transported me back to my early 20’s when flying back home after working in America for three months, I was overwhelmed with the beauty of our landscape, and Mary captured that scene perfectly.”

Fiona works in an NHS nursery where the book budget is small and says she will enjoy letting the children pick some new books.

Members of the u3a’s photographic groups submitted photos for the recent successful online exhibition. Photography is only one of many activities that are open to u3a members. There are over 140 different groups, including sports, music, languages, creative writing, science and technology, arts and crafts, local history, dancing, and walking. Membership is only £13.50 a year and is open to those in the area who are retired or semi-retired. Information on how to join is found on the website at ilkleyu3a.org.
