Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club have been promoted to the National Division, the premier league of club tennis in the UK.
On Saturday, Ilkley dominated a 5–1 victory over Boldon LTC in the North East Regional Division title match.
With a packed balcony cheering them on, the Ilkley squad of Kyle Brassington, James Ickringill, Joe Kelt and Alistaire MacGregor (Captain), delivered a performance to remember. The winners would not only be crowned regional champions but earn their place among the best club teams in the country, and Ilkley rose magnificently to the occasion.
The National Club League (NCL) is the LTA’s premier team tennis competition for clubs across the UK, with teams working their way up through regional divisions to reach the National Division, the very top tier of club tennis in the country. Today, Ilkley earned their place at the top table.
The match format saw each of the four players contest a singles match first, followed by two doubles rubbers.

Leading the charge was Ilkley Tennis Club’s Head Coach and former world number 810, Kyle Brassington, playing at number one. After a closely contested opening, Kyle shifted gears and took complete control, overwhelming his opponent with powerful groundstrokes that left little room for reply.
Captain Alistaire MacGregor and Joe Kelt then continued the onslaught, both making short work of their opponents. Alistaire won 6–1, 6–1 and Joe went one better with a brilliant 6–0, 6–0, an emphatic statement from two of Ilkley’s most experienced players.
Boldon’s only response came in a compelling battle at number two, where their player faced James Ickringill in a captivating contest between two players who both rely on finesse and guile to unpick their opponents. It was a thrilling head-to-head that, on this occasion, narrowly went Boldon’s way. Singles concluded 3–1 to Ilkley.
With promotion tantalisingly close, Ilkley elected to pair Kyle and Joe for the first doubles, and the result was the highlight of the day.

The pace and precision on display from both sides thrilled the watching crowd, but Kyle and Joe edged ahead to take the first set. Boldon, to their immense credit, battled back to level at one set apiece, forcing a 10-point third-set tiebreak. The tension was electric. At 6–6 it was anyone’s match, but Kyle and Joe held firm, dominating the net while absorbing everything Boldon threw at them, before holding their nerve to clinch it.
James and Alistaire then wrapped things up in style, winning their doubles 6-4,6-2 to seal a thoroughly deserved 5–1 victory.
The result means Ilkley are promoted as the North East Regional Division Champions and will compete in the National Division next season, going up against some of the best tennis players in the country. It is a remarkable achievement for the team, the club, and everyone who has supported them.
The team say they are already setting their sights on what lies ahead, relishing the challenge of testing themselves at the very highest level of club tennis in the UK., and say the best is yet to come.
A spokesperson said: “A huge thank you to everyone who came down to the club to cheer the team on today — the packed balcony made an enormous difference. Your support means the world to the squad. See you in the National Division!”
